International Women’s Day – Demanding the Rights and Dignity of All Women Globally
A Bittersweet Celebration and Call to Action! March 8, 2011

Today March 8, 2011 is International Women’s Day

A bittersweet celebration remembering the struggles and resilience of women that have fought for equality before us

Today we remember all of the women who survive each and every day for the injustices of society

            Today we demand being heard!

Today we demand our right to live!

            Without fear, pain or suffering!

Let us be who we really are!

            Today we remember:

            • For every woman who has to think twice about eating only to “fit in”
            • For every woman who feels unsafe walking down the street at night, not knowing who will be standing at the next turn
            • For every woman who cries herself to sleep after being violated sexually by her partner, a family member or a stranger
            • For every woman that has ever had her pictures plastered on the internet, through sms or email
            • For every woman who has been denied a job or questioned about commitment because she is a woman
            • For every woman who has to do above and beyond just to be noticed at work to be considered for a promotion
            • For every woman who has to compromise her safety and well being to put food on her table
            • For every woman who has been slapped, punched, kicked and called derogatory names on a consistent basis
            • For every woman who is denied education in order for her brother to become ‘successful”
            • For every woman who covers her face with immense layers of make up just to be accepted in this world of fashion, glamour and commodification
            • For every woman who has ever been forced to dress in a way that is deemed acceptable to her male family members
            • For every woman who has been threatened to be killed because of her “dishonourable behaviour”
            • For every woman who has been killed for being a woman, as a child or an adult
            • For every woman who does not have the right to choose her own partner – who is forced to marry someone against their will
            • For every woman who has been silenced and not given a voice to speak
For every woman that lives in this world each and every day.

For you, for us, we celebrate International Women’s Day.

Today we demand dignity and respect for all Women! Happy 100th International Women’s Day!

Let us continue the struggle of women’s equality and the dignity that we deserve.
